Buttcaps were used to counter balance a spear, protect the end from splintering, and provided a last resort back up, should the spear tip be broken off in battle. This buttcap is constructed of high carbon steel. Socket is 1” across.

Heavy! Awesome, practical, many different uses I bought 3 of these to counter cold steel brand spears and they get the job done and then some. I would not recommend this for any shorter spears or spears with very light Heads/shafts unless you are using it to drive it into the earth on an angle. The solid tip is heavy and Can Make a very powerful lance head by itself as well as a tool for many things.
    Different uses:
Great multi tool for leather working (carving, shaping, burnishing, polishing, stamping the socket hole on wet leather etc)
    Flag pole tip
    Stake driver (hammer)
    Awl/Chisel
    Many more just use imagination

Great counter balance Just finished pairing this buttcap with the long bladed hewing spear head and it works beautifully, as well as gives the entire spear an intimidating look. Mike’s review is correct, that it is a heavy buttcap and so wouldn’t work well with short or light spear heads. You need something equally heavy (and heavy it is!) on the other end, or else it will just flip out of your hands (we learned that after attaching the buttcap first with only a stick to balance!)

Solid This butt-cap is solid you could easily brain someone with this guy, I love the weight. Will order from this company again couldn’t be happier with the product.

Bought 2, & I’m happy with them. I ordered 2 of these to make a weighted, double-butted staff. The socket is 3 inches deep, tapering from one inch to a half inch inside. The overall length is 10.5 inches, not 8.5. I would have liked to see a pin hole drilled in the side to attach it more securely – I may do that before I start exercising with the staff. You don’t want this slipping off the end when you swing it – it will break whatever it hits. As for performance, I have broken through concrete with it, & the tip had a little bit of deflection. A little file work, less than 5 minutes, & the tip is back to normal. Fine grit sandpaper took out scratches & the little bit of surface rust from when I forgot it in the yard overnight. I used it to plant spring flower bulbs – punch this into the ground, pull it out, drop in the bulb, kick dirt over it- fastest planting ever!

beautiful but the tip is soft and dull great packing job, very well turned shape, heavy and balances long spears well. even ok with an assegai spear head on the other end. but the tip is soft and both came with their tips flattened. great decorative use and possibly good for bashing but not stabbing.

Mike seems to be a little confused about the uses of this thing, but he’s dead on with it being heavy. This thing is unbelievably hefty for the size of it. Can’t imagine how something as heavy as this would ever make a good implement to be thrown, quite honestly, unless you’re Achilles himself, claiming the ability to throw anything with it attached to this cap is just silly.

Not thrilled that the tip is blunted. They are exactly as described and they are quite heavy but that’s not issue for me. They look spectacular.
